Decorah Area Faith Coalition responds to dismissal of
immigration charges against Agriprocessors' Sholom Rubashkin Breaking Bread Breaking Barriers event Sunday
The Decorah Area Faith Coalition (DAFC) is responding to news of the dismissal of all immigration charges against Agriprocessors' Sholom Rubashkin.
The group has issued the following response:
"At this time the DAFC expresses our heart-felt disappointment that the detained workers will not have an opportunity to tell their story and seek justice through the United States legal system. We recognize and share their feelings of futility and frustration. As the implications of this decision by the federal prosecutors develops the Decorah Area Faith Coalition pledges to continue to stand in solidarity with each of the detained workers and their families," said the statement.
"Although the charges have been dropped, the journey has not ended. Our understanding of the urgent need for reformation of immigration policies in the United States is deeper. The coalition remains committed to this just and compassionate cause."
According to the DAFC, "Many in the Decorah area have worked hard as hosts for our new friends and
neighbors. Many have taken advantage of opportunities to learn about immigration and related issues affecting Central America. Discussions will be lead during the Breaking Bread Breaking Barriers event (Sunday, Nov. 22, at the Decorah High School, noon to 1:45 p.m.).
"Through the events of the past 18 months, our relationships with each other have deepened. We have seen the face of true, global compassion in our neighbor's eyes and by God's grace we have changed."
