Decorah Police reporting phone scam

The Decorah Police Department received a report about a phone scam Sunday.

The caller in the scam states they are with the Financial Education of America and tells the person they are calling that they have just won a $100 gift card to Wal-Mart and also a $100 gift card to any gas station. The scam caller asks to verify the scam victim's MasterCard and verifies the victim's address. They ask for the victim's credit card number, noting that they know the card starts with the number five. All MasterCards start with a five.

The callers are persistent and continue calling over several days asking for credit card information. They tell the victim they are a winner and they only need to pay $3.96 for shipping.

If you receive any such calls, do not give out any personal information, credit card numbers, bank account numbers or Social Security numbers and also don't send any money. For more information, call the Decorah Police Department at (563) 382-3667.
