Football: Enforce the rules, or remove the face mask
I've written this column, or something similar, several times throughout my 37-year journalism career, but I feel so strongly about the subject I must step up on my soapbox once again and expound on a matter of critical importance to sports fans everywhere.

Commercial vs. residential rights issue not going away
If the citizens of Winneshiek County learned nothing else by the recent debate and ensuing approval of a sand quarry operation on Canoe Valley Road north of Decorah, they should at least be cognizant of the main message delivered: If you are going to build your dream home in the country, where ag land is exempt from zoning, you'd better make sure - double, triple sure - a quarry or large livestock confinement operation or auto salvage yard or whatever isn't planned for the near future.

Ignoring needed renovations at high school a big mistake
n reference to passing a multi-million-dollar school bond issue in Decorah, the best way to sum it up is to paraphrase the first words of the classic Dickens' novel "A Tale of Two Cities:" It's the best time to bring it before the voters, and it is also the absolute worst time to convince taxpayers to shell out more of their hard-earned dollars.

Celebrating the most prolific, talented songwriter of our time
f you asked the average Joe or Jill who they considered to be the greatest songwriter and entertainer of our time - perhaps ever - a lot of names would be mentioned before the person who probably deserves the honor most would come to the fore. Odds are, the name wouldn't be brought up at all. And that's a doggone shame.

America owes Reid, Clinton, Blagojevich a big 'thank you'
The citizens of the United States of America owe a sincere "thank you" to Senator Harry Reid, former President Bill Clinton and disgraced Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich for their insensitive/unintelligent - make that racist - remarks concerning President Barack Obama. (1 comments)

A billion here, a billion there and soon you're talking real money
It was a lazy Saturday morning and I was listening to the news before plugging myself in and officially starting the day with a cup of Joe and a bowl of oatmeal.
