A stellar wrestling career by South Winn senior Chris Brincks culminated in a second-place finish at 195 pounds Saturday at the state wrestling tournament held at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Brincks, who last season finished fifth at 195 pounds, competed under the lights of the arena before falling to No. 1-ranked Tyler Hoffman of East Buchanan in the finals.
In addition, two other local grapplers earned a spot on the winners’ podium by taking fifth at their respective weight class.
A great finish for Chris
Brincks came into the tournament with a 45-3 season record and a No. 4 ranking. When the seeding came out, he was matched against Kris Ihde of Clayton Ridge (31-9). Brincks had won their only meeting of the season by fall in January. This time he got a takedown 31 seconds into the match. He earned two back points, then three back points to lead 7-0. He pinned Ihde in 1:36.
That put Brinks into the quarterfinals Friday morning, battling No. 6 Ty Schneider of Southeast Warren, who was 43-3 on the year. It was the first meeting between the two. Brincks struck first with a takedown 17 seconds into the match. He allowed Schneider to escape with 10 seconds remaining in the first. In the down position in the second and up 2-1, Brincks escaped 14 seconds in. With 46 seconds left in the second, he took Schneider down again. Schneider escaped to make it 5-2; however, Brincks got a takedown with 15 seconds left to go up 7-2 with two minutes remaining. Schneider earned an escape early in the third. However, Brincks took him down one last time on the way to a 9-4 victory.
Friday night, Brincks faced No. 2 Ben Wellman, a senior from Tri-Center Neola who had a 43-0 record. Neither grappler scored in the first period. In the second, Brincks fell behind when Wellman escaped. However, Brincks earned a takedown to lead 2-1. Being down in the third, Brincks escaped to win 3-1.
It was an epic battle for the title, with Brincks facing No. 1 Tyler Hoffman of East Buchanan. With a 44-0 record, Hoffman had handed Brincks one of his only losses of the season, pinning him in 4:52 in mid-January.
In the finals, Hoffman struck first with a takedown 40 seconds into the match. Brincks escaped seconds later but was taken down once again to fall behind 4-1. Hoffman escaped in the second to make it 5-1. Brincks chose down in the third and escaped to make it 5-2. He was taken down with 1:10 remaining but reversed Hoffman to cut it to 7-4. However, Hoffman escaped and held on for the 8-4 win.
Brincks finished his senior campaign 48-4. He’s the first SW grappler since Jason Winkler in 2008 to finish second.
