Four Luther College swimmers have qualified for the 2014 NCAA III National Swimming and Diving Championships that will be held March 19-22, at the IU Natatorium on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University (IUPU) located in Indianapolis, Ind.
Preliminary rounds will begin at 9 a.m., with finals starting at 5 p.m. all four days.
Senior Erin Connolly, sophomores Clare Slagel and Lexi Scharmer and freshman Emily Anderson have qualified in both the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. Their 200 medley relay qualifying mark (1:43.99) ranks fifth best in the nation, while their 400 medley relay time (3:50.23) ranks 13th. This foursome will also compete in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays as bonus events.
Individually, Slagel qualified for the 500 freestyle and the 100 and 200 backstroke. Slagel, who earned All-American honors in both the 100 and 200 backstroke last year, enters the national finale ranked 14th in the 500 freestyle (4:58.91), fourth in the 100 backstroke (55.14) and second in the 200 backstroke (1:58.61).
Scharmer and Connolly will also swim individual bonus events. Scharmer will compete in the 100 butterfly, while Connolly will compete in the 100 breaststroke. Both posted B-Cut marks in their respective events.
The top eight place winners in both relay and individual events earn All-American honors. Place winners 9-16 are recognized as honorable mention All-American.
