It was a wild night on the Decorah ball diamond Thursday night as the Decorah softball team (2-5, 2-4 NEIC) split two contests with Oelwein (1-7, 1-3 NEIC).
In the first game, it came down to who batted last as the Vikings won 9-8.
Decorah scored four runs in the fourth inning to go up 4-0. Oelwein responded with three in the fifth. Decorah added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to lead 5-3. However, things fell apart in the top of the seventh when Oelwein scored five times, taking an 8-5 lead. Decorah answered in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, the Vikes scored four times, with Payton Hjerleid driving in the winning run to give Decorah the 9-8 win.
Decorah pounded nine hits. Maddy Ihde was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Riley Hubka had two hits and two runs scored to go with two stolen bases. Hjerleid had two hits and two stolen bases.
