The South Winn softball team (7-9, 6-5 UIC) earned a split at the Denver tournament Saturday.
Thursday’s contests with Edgewood-Colesburg were rained out and moved to Wednesday, June 25, at home, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
In the first game Saturday, the Warriors tangled with Nashua-Plainfield (4-11), winning 12-10. The Warriors struck first for two runs in the first inning. They added four in the third and one in the top of the fourth. However, the Huskies responded with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the contest. South Winn put up five in the fifth to go ahead 12-7. Nashua-Plainfield scored a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh.
South Winn pounded 14 hits. Brittany Shindelar was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two home runs and six RBI. Jenna Elsbernd had three hits, a double and two RBI. Abby Hageman produced two hits, including a solo home run, and two runs scored. Taylor Buchheit had two hits and two RBI while Joclyn Bushman had two hits. Buchheit got the win. The incoming freshman allowed six earned runs while scattering nine hits and striking out nine.
