Fans of the South Winn track teams will have a lot of reasons to cheer this week as the Warriors are sending 10 entries to the state track meet.

The state meet runs Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Overall, the South Winn boys finished fourth in team standings while the girls took third.

Qualifying process

In Class 2A, the top two place winners from each state qualifying site are automatically entered for the state meet. The next eight best times/distances across the state also qualify. In total there are 24 entries per event.

The big five

The boys team will have five events at the big meet.

Austin Breitsprecher has advanced to state in the discus. The senior threw 148 feet, 6 inches, a lifetime best, to take first at the state qualifying meet. This will be his first state appearance. He is seeded 14th overall.

Also individually qualifying was Jordan Rommes. Rommes, a sophomore, finished second in the high jump by clearing 6 feet even. This will be the first time he's competed in this event at state. He is seeded 13th.

The Warriors had three relays take first. Starting the meet strong, the 4x800 of Garrett Bohach, Devin Franzen, Nathan Meyer and Alex Stammeyer produced a time of 8:20.56. Last year the quartet of Michael Havel, Bohach, Franzen and Stammeyer advanced to state, finishing 13th. This year they are seeded 10th.

The distance medley foursome of Jared Schroeder, Rommes, Bohach and Franzen broke the tape in 3:42.44. That time is the fifth fastest in the class. In 2012 the team of Colton Hageman, Rommes, Havel and Michael Lyons finished 10th.
