The South Winn baseball team (25-5, 12-4 UIC) played two non-conference games last week, earning a split.
On the road
Wednesday the Warriors traveled to Oelwein (18-9), defeating the Huskies 6-4.
The Warriors built the lead early, scoring a run in the first, two in the second and third and one in the fifth. Oelwein responded with four in the bottom of the fifth. However, starting pitcher Trevor Schweinefus shut down the Husky offense from there.
The Warriors scored six runs on seven hits. Jordan Rommes went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base. Ryan Hageman produced a double. Colton Hageman, Jared Schroeder, Schweinefus and Andre Walz all had a single.
"This was a very nice win for our guys, especially since it came against a quality baseball team in Oelwein. With their pitching, they're a team that could make a run in tournament play. We really had to grind it out in this one to come away with a win," said Coach Ben Obermann.
Schweinefus allowed 10 hits and four earned runs.
"Trevor had his toughest outing of the year, but he really battled. He scattered ten hits through seven innings, and it was one of those nights where Oelwein was just finding holes," said Obermann.
