A 28-point third quarter effort pushed the Class 3A No. 2 Decorah football team (9-0, 6-0 district) to an undefeated regular season as the Vikings defeated Western Dubuque (4-5, 3-3 district) to a 57-14 victory.

The win, the 23rd in a row for the Vikes, sealed the district crown for Decorah, which is the 28th conference/district title in school history.

"I'm very proud of this team. They've really come a long ways. We felt we could be pretty sound because all the guys that are starting now were back-up reserve people last year and playing against really good seniors from last year, so they all got that practice time against them and sat and bided their time, and this is their time now," said Head Coach Bill Post. "They're doing a great, fantastic job. It isn't luck, they've worked to get here."

Decorah now moves to the second part of the season - the playoffs. The Vikes will host DeWitt (4-5) Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. at Viking Stadium (see box for ticket details).

Friday night

Blue and red-clad fans might have been a bit nervous Friday night as it took Decorah over 24 minutes to put the game away.

Decorah forced a three and out on the Bobcats. Taking over on their own 42, Decorah methodically drove down the field, highlighted by a Bryce Pierce 6-yard rush for the score. With the Cole Svestka kick, it was 7-0.
