Decorah boys swim coach Drew Pellett has reason to be proud of his team.
The Vikings posted their best finish in years at the 36th annual Marcussen Invite, held Saturday in Cedar Falls.
Thanks to a big finish in the breaststroke with Jerod Heying and Nolan Heffern tying for sixth, Decorah outscored Mason City 27-3, pulling the Vikes to within five points at the end of nine events. However, Mason City's "A" 400-yard freestyle relay out-touched Decorah's relay by 0.42 seconds, and their "B" relay finished ahead of Decorah. With those results, Decorah finished third overall with 342 points. Dowling Catholic was the winner with 630 points, while Mason City was second with 359.
"Our depth of swimmers paved the way to a third-place finish, which is our highest finish in years," said Pellett.
