Facing a tough opponent from the Upper Iowa Conference, the Decorah baseball team (17-10, 9-7 NEIC) picked up two quality wins in the waning part of the season Tuesday night.
In the first game of the twin bill on the road against Clayton Ridge-Central (26-7), the Vikings won 4-0 in eight innings. Neither team was able to scratch across a run in regulation, despite the Vikings having chances in the fourth and the seventh. However, the eighth inning was a different story. Brett LaRue started things with a single. Collin Nimrod was hit by a pitch, then Jake Hovden singled. A ground out scored LaRue, leaving two runners on. That was when senior Austin Ashbacher stepped up to the plate, belting a three-run home run over left-center field to make it 4-0.
Nimrod, the starting pitcher for Decorah, set the War Eagles down in order in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the win.
Nimrod threw all eight innings, giving up just two hits and striking out seven.
