It was a split over the weekend for the Decorah girls basketball team (5-11, 3-6 NEIC) as the Vikes defeated Oelwein and lost to Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Big efforts by several team members led to a win for Decorah Friday at Oelwein (3-14, 0-10 NEIC).
The Vikes pulled ahead in the second half to win 57-49.
The Decorah defense was tough at the start of the game, holding Oelwein to just four points in eight minutes of play. Ahead 12-4 at the start of the second quarter, Decorah battled to maintain its lead at the half. It was cut by seven points, making it 27-26 Vikes at the break.
In the third quarter, the game went back and forth, with Decorah going up by three at 34-31 halfway through and 36-33 with two minutes remaining. At the quarter intermission it was 41-37 Vikes.
The final frame saw Decorah fight to maintain the lead, never letting Oelwein take control. The Vikes led 46-44 with three minutes remaining and battled to score 11 in the last three minutes.
Several players stepped up offensively. Freshman Taylor Schuring was the leading scorer with 13 points. Anna Madrigal had 10 points while Abby Arend scored nine. Anja Arend added seven.
