The Decorah and South Winn cross country teams took part in the Rich Engel Classic at Birdsal Park in Cedar Falls Thursday.
It was a tough competition with 16 of some of the best schools in the state
The Class 3A No. 2 Decorah boys team finished third overall with 88 points while Class 2A No. 8 South Winn didn't have a varsity team score. Class 4A No. 5 Dubuque Senior won the varsity meet with 60 points.
The Class 3A No. 2 Decorah girls team finished third overall with 94 points in team standings. South Winn, which is ranked No. 7 in Class 2A, took 14th with 357 points. Class 4A No. 3 Cedar Rapids Kennedy won the meet with 40 points.
Boys race for the finish
The Vikes posted an average time of 16:38, with a spread of 1:14. Class 3A No. 5 Patrick Larson led the way for the squad by taking fourth in 16:06. No. 3 Kyle Hosting was seventh overall in 16:20. No. 4 Thomas Knobbe toured the course in 16:31 to take 15th. No. 24 Ethan Pankow needed 16:50 to complete the 5K, taking 20th. Isaac Marquardt rounded out the top five by finishing 42nd in 17:20. Rounding out the varsity squad were Forde Nesteby, 54th, 17:37; and Hans Holkesvik, 79th, 18:21.
