It was a successful trip to the blue oval for the Decorah girls track team.
Sending 17 events to the Class 3A state meet in Des Moines May 16-18, the girls finished 19th overall with 12 points.
The highlight of the tournament was the girls distance medley relay. Monica Tappe, Tess Olinger, Dailen Folkedahl and Taylor Schuring, competing in the second heat, finished third overall in 4:10.79. The winning time went to Solon with a 4:09.61, while Wavelry-Shell Rock finished second in 4:09.63.
The Vikes used Schuring, a freshman, as the anchor. She had a tall task, trying to catch GoHawk Anna Holdiman, who was the 3,000 meter champion. Although she didn't quite catch Holdiman, Schuring said it was a great experience getting to run at state.
"It's a huge opportunity. I couldn't do any of it without my coaches and my teammates pushing me along the way," she said.
