Traveling to southern Fayette County Friday night, the Decorah boys basketball team (9-5, 5-4 NEIC) defeated Oelwein (3-11 0-8 NEIC) 65-42.
The Decorah defense was the story in the first part of the game. It limited the Huskies to just five points in the first eight minutes of the game. At the first buzzer, the Vikes led 14-5. In the second, the defense continued to harass the Huskies, this time holding them to 10 points. At the half, it was 29-15 Decorah.
The third quarter saw the Vikes continue to extend its lead and put the win in the left column.
"We rebounded nicely and played a solid 32 minutes of basketball," said Coach Jonathan Carlson. "Our intensity and attention to detail was, for the most part, solid all night, and a lot of the guys stepped up for a total team victory.
"We have to keep sawing wood and embrace the process of continued improvement, whether it be a game or practice."
Michael Peter and James Ostlie led the way for Decorah. Both seniors had 12 points. Lee Rollins added nine while Bryce Pierce, Josh Miller, Patrick Winter and Holt Johansen all had six.
The Vikes are at New Hampton tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m.
