The Decorah girls soccer team split their two games last week.
Thursday it was a sweet 16 for sophomore Shelby Stalberger as she scored the lone goal in the 1-0 win over No. 15 Independence.
Juinior goalkeeper Olivia Rauk turned away 10 shots while the defensive line of Becca Alcock, Leigh Balderrama, Hannah Bernatz, Madisyn Bockman, Alice Gullekson, Clare Gullekson, Stalberger and Anna Weselmann all assisted.
"Our defense is really finally starting to gel and communicate more effectively. They worked extremely hard to deny shots and defend all the way to the goal line," said Coach Julie Shockey. "We outplayed Independence for about 70 of the 80 minutes, and are so close to having an all out 80-minute battle. We're pulling together as a team at the right time. The girls played with heart, hustle and fire."
The JV team defeated Independence 1-0 on a goal by freshman Maddy Hoyme, assisted by Makayla Patterson.
