With a spot at the state tournament on the line, the Decorah boys soccer team (7-5) came out with a mission Wednesday in the substate semifinal game with Independence (2-16), winning 4-0 on its home field.

With the victory the Vikes moved to the substate final against Dubuque Wahlert (5-9) Saturday (May 25), with the winner headed to state. The Vikings defeated Wahlert 3-1 earlier in the season.

The state tournament for Class 2A begins Thursday, May 30, around 2:30 p.m. at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.

Wednesday's game

Wednesday night the Vikes were in charge from the opening minute. With a steady rain coming down, it did nothing to stop the intensity of the Vikes as senior Ethan Pankow immediately put a shot off the post, firing a warning shot. Within eight minutes of the start, Pankow was rewarded for his strong play, getting the Vikes on the board.
