A kickoff return of 91 yards by Jake Hovden proved to be the game winner as the Class 3A No. 10 and defending state champions Decorah football team (1-0) held on to defeat Class 3A No. 4 Waverly-Shell Rock (0-1) 17-14 in Waverly Friday night.

Hovden took the kick with under a minute to go in the first half and ran it to the house to give Decorah a 17-10 lead.

Waverly-Shell Rock scored on its first possession of the second half to make it 17-14. After a Decorah blocked field goal attempt early in the fourth, the game was delayed well over an hour due to lightning. When it resumed around 11:20 p.m., the Viking defense held tough, holding the Go-Hawks on two fourth down attempts.
