Facing the defending Class 1A state champions Friday night, the Decorah boys soccer team (0-2) fell to Iowa City Regina 1-0 in double overtime.
The Regals rolled through the state tournament last spring, winning 4-0 in every game.
“For us to field a young team and create an absolute dog fight out of the game was really pleasing to me. The boys gave their all on the field, and we were quite literally inches from winning the game on a couple of occasions. We defended really well, and whenever we attacked, I thought we created quality chances,” said Coach David Keller. “The only thing missing from our game was a finishing touch on goal. Had we converted one of our multiple chances, we would’ve walked out with a victory. I’m disappointed with the result but couldn’t be happier with our team. The performance, effort and grit our boys showed were quality, and if we keep putting that kind of dedication out there, good things will come.”
