A bad seventh inning spelled trouble for the Decorah softball team (2-6, 2-5 NEIC) Monday night as the Vikings fell to Waukon (4-7, 1-4 NEIC) 8-5 at home.
Decorah struck first, plating two runs in the first inning. Waukon came back with three in the top of the third. Decorah tied the game in the fourth, then took a 5-3 lead after five innings. Things fell apart in the seventh when Waukon scored five times to win 8-5.
“We need to figure out a way to finish a complete seven innings. We have to be able to bring all three components to the field for every day. So far, we’ve had only 2-of-3 each game. Tonight we put the ball in play a lot and forced them to make errors,” said Coach Teri Olson. “We need to find a way to capitalize on our free runners. Unfortunately, we were unable to come up with a timely hit with runners in scoring position.”
