In the first conference battle for either team, the Decorah baseball team (2-3, 1-1 NEIC) and New Hampton (5-1, 1-1 NEIC) split its two games Tuesday night in New Hampton.
In the first contest, errors by Decorah and timely hitting by the Chickasaws led to a 5-4 win for the home team. New Hampton scored first in the first inning, then added two runs in the fourth. The Vikings had two runs cross the plate in the fifth inning; however, New Hampton answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame. With a run in the sixth and one in the seventh, Decorah tied the game at 4-4. However, New Hampton came back in the bottom of the seventh. Three of their five hits came in the inning, including two infield smacks. With the bases loaded, the Chickasaws hit a long fly ball to center to win the game.
The Vikings had five hits. Jake Hovden had two of those, with an RBI. Collin Nimrod, Austin Ashbacher and Brady Dawley had the others.
Kyle Kane was the losing pitcher. He gave up two earned runs on five hits.
