The Decorah girls tennis team saw their team season come to an end Saturday as the Vikes lost in the second round of regional play to Aplington-Parkersburg 4-5.
Earlier in the day Decorah defeated Grundy Center 5-1.
This is the first time since team competition began in 1994 that Decorah has not advanced to the third round of team play.
How it happened
Decorah first faced Grundy Center, picking up wins from Maddie Grimm, Claire Breitenstein, Laura Munkel, Noreen Gentry and Katie Whitehill, all in singles play.
"Maddie Grimm played possibly the smartest match of her year in defeating her opponent in a third set super tiebreaker," said Coach Larry Berland. "Noreen Gentry also showed some grit when she held off a very determined opponent at the No. 5 spot. After winning the first set easily and quickly, Noreen's opponent stepped up her game and had Noreen on her heels and down through the middle part of their second set. Thanks to some expert coaching by Reg Laursen, Noreen righted her ship just in time to force a tiebreaker.
