There were lots of smiles and lots of hugs for the Decorah boys and girls cross country teams Saturday in Fort Dodge as both teams won Class 3A titles at the state meet.
The girls team won its fifth state title in school history and first since 2007. The Vikes scored 63 points and had five runners in the top 20. MOC-Floyd Valley took second with 85 points.
The Vikes had only six runners post times as senior Brinn Anderson was unable to complete the race due to injury.
The boys won their 15th state title in school history. That's the most of any school regardless of class. It's the first since 1992.
Decorah took first with 62 points. Pella earned second with 74 points.
The boys had two runners finish in the top 10. Senior Kyle Hosting earned fifth while Patrick Larson took 10th. The top five runners finished in the top 25.
