Two of the top teams in the state met on the diamond Tuesday night in Calmar.
The South Winn baseball team came into the game with a 25-5 record in Class 2A while Decorah boasted a 22-8 mark in Class 3A.
Although both teams exploded in the first inning, it was Decorah that came out on top after seven frames, winning 8-3.
In the first inning, the two teams combined for eight runs. The Vikes were up first, using five hits and a walk to score five times. The inning was highlighted by a Josey Jewell two-run double. Next up was James Ostlie, who smoked a single. He advanced on the throw to the plate. Kyle Kane helped his cause by hitting a single to score Ostlie.
South Winn pounded on pitcher Kane in the bottom half of the inning. The Warriors used their speed to get three runs on the board, thanks to hits and walks.
That score remained until the top of the sixth, when Decorah's Jewell smashed a three-run home run to widening the margin.
