It was a happy night for the Turkey Valley baseball team (17-17) as the Trojans defeated East Buchanan (11-17) 11-2 Tuesday night at Starmont in the first round of district action.

The Trojans next face Starmont (10-21) today, Thursday, July 18, at 7 p.m. in Starmont. The Stars advanced by defeating Maquoketa Valley 2-1 Tuesday night.



Getting the lead

The Trojans stuck with it Tuesday night in the victory. Using a hit batter, a walk and two singles, the Trojans had two runs score in the first inning. However, East Buc answered with two in the bottom half of the inning.

After a scoreless second inning, the Trojan offense went to work in the third. With three hits, a fielder's choice, a sacrifice and two errors, TV put up three runs in the inning. Now leading 5-2, the Trojans scored two more in the fourth inning on two singles, an error and three fielder's choice balls. In the fifth TV added two runs when Ryan Busta smashed a two-run single. The final two runs came in the sixth when Riley Busta had a two-RBI single.



"The kids played well. We had a few two-out hits which allowed us to open up a lead," said Coach Dan Stepan.

Turkey Valley put together a 12-hit effort. Ryan Busta was 3-for-5 with three singles and two RBIs. Kyle Reicks had two hits, two runs scored, a double and two RBIs. Dalton Hackman had two singles and scored three runs while Jacob Hackman had two singles and scored two runs.

Ri. Busta was the winning pitcher. He went all seven innings, giving up no earned runs on three hits.



More about Starmont

The Stars are batting .246 this season, with a .339 slugging average and a .354 on-base percentage. They had 21 doubles, 11 home runs, 105 runs scored and 77 stolen bases. The pitching staff has a 5.59 ERA with 162 strikeouts.

By comparison, Turkey Valley has a .273 batting average with a .339 slugging clip. They've scored 192 runs, with 40 doubles, four home runs and 36 stolen bases. The pitchers have put together a 4.98 ERA wih 147 strikeouts.

The winner moves on to the regional final Saturday, July 7, at Starmont at 7 p.m. against the winner of Kee High (31-10) and Wapsie Valley (8-14).

The substate final is Tuesday, July 23, at New Hampton at 7 p.m.
