The Turkey Valley wrestling team nearly pulled off an upset Tuesday night in the regional team dual meet in Sumner; however, the Trojans came up just short.

The Trojans defeated Class 1A No. 13 Maquoketa Valley 40-30 in the first round. In the battle for a bid to go to state, the Trojans fell to No. 4 Sumner-Fred 43-31.

Sumner-Fred advances to the state dual meet in Des Moines Wednesday, Feb. 13.

In the first round against Maquoketa Valley, the Trojans picked up five falls, coming from Tom Reicks (113), John Hageman (132), Levi Klimesh (170), Brian Schmitt (220) and Class 1A No. 4 Luke Kuennen (285). Riley Meirick (138) won by a 13-2 major decision while Class 1A No. 9 Austin Vrzak picked up a forfeit.

In the second battle of the night, the Trojans had pins from Vrzak in 1:50, Tyler Sawyer (160) in 4:54, Schmitt in 48 seconds and L. Kuennen in 1:50. Also picking up big wins were R. Meirick in a 12-1 major decision and Kyle Reicks (195) by an 8-4 decision.
