Fans of high school soccer knew Thursday night’s playoff game between Decorah and Dubuque Wahlert would be an all-out battle.
For 80 minutes, the rivals went back and forth on the Decorah field.
Unfortunately for the home team, the Vikings couldn’t keep pace with the fast Golden Eagles, falling 2-0 in the second-round playoff game.
Decorah ends the year with a 5-8-2 overall record.
Wahlert (4-14) had its season ended Saturday afternoon when it fell to Cedar Rapids Xavier (9-9) in the substate final. Xavier represents the bracket in the state tournament, which runs June 5-7 in Des Moines.
In Thursday’s game, the Vikings gave up two late first-half goals. The second goal was a lucky one by Wahlert, just sneaking in the corner of the goal.
Decorah is in good shape for next season. They graduate just two players - Zach Wilson and Dalton Harvey.
They will be back next season with seven seniors, five juniors and four sophomores, all with varsity experience.
