It was a successful day at the Waukon Invite for the Turkey Valley volleyball team (10-6, 3-1 UIC) as the Trojans picked up four wins.
"We played amazing this weekend. Our blocking was right on, and we served as usual excellent. When we got to the tournament, the girls came together and played some of the best ball I've seen this week," said Coach Tammy Vrzak. "We beat New Hampton, which was our third time's a charm game. They did everything they needed to do to get to the gold tournament final."
The Trojans defeated Hope Lutheran 2-0 (21-12, 22-20). Taylor Novotny had six kills, eight attack attempts, six assists and served 5-for-6. Johanna Blazek served 11-for-11 and made four digs. Ashley Kurash had seven assists and served 7-for-7.
It was a 2-0 victory over Kee High (21-17, 21-15). Kayla Schaufenbuel made seven kills, 13 attack attempts and served 12-for-12 with four aces. Kurash had nine assists while Ari Rausch had eight digs.
Waukon proved tough for the Trojans as they fell 1-2 (19-21, 21-14, 14-16). Schaufenbuel led the way at the net with six kills and 18 attack attempts. Novotny had 10 assists and eight digs. Blazek had nine digs. Kurash served 13-for-14.
It was another 2-0 win over Kee (25-25, 25-14). Blazek served 13-for-13 with four aces, 12 digs, seven kills and 16 attack attempts. Novotny had 14 assists and Kurash had 11. Allison Kuennen made seven kills and 17 attack attempts.
Facing New Hampton, Turkey Valley won 2-0 (27-25, 25-16). Novotny served 14-for-16 with two aces. Blazek had seven kills and 19 attack attempts. Raush made 19 digs.
In the final match, TV lost to Spring Grove, Minn., 1-2 (25-20, 20-25, 10-15). Kurash served 13-for-13 with 12 assists and 10 digs. Rausch had 15 digs and served 11-for-11.
The Trojans host Sumner-Fred tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m.
