It was a great start to the season for the Decorah boys swim team Saturday as the Vikings competed at the Newton boys swimming invite.

Decorah finished second overall with 313 points. Indianola took first with 317 points.

Decorah trailed Indianola 279 to 273 heading into the final event, the 4x400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Dalton Matt, Jerod Heying, Nolan Heffern and Mac Faldet posted a time of 4:07.39, edging Indianola by 0.26 seconds to take first. The B relay of J.D. Prentice, Matthew Appler, Trevor Massman and Matt Schissel finished one place behind Indianola, making the Vikes four points short of the victory.

Decorah was actually in third place most of the day until the backstroke. In that event, Heying came in first, the only individual winner for Decorah, finishing in 1:09.63. Heffern came in second in 1:10.73, pushing the Vikes back into the team race.
