The season started on a strong note for the Decorah girls swim team as the Vikings competed at the Ram Relays Saturday.

In the first meet of the 2013 campaign, the Vikings finished fourth in team standings with 52 points. Cedar Falls won the meet with 109 points.

The Decorah JV team picked up 83 points, good for second.

This meet is different than most of the others Decorah competes in because it is all relays. Events that are traditionally individual are modified to be relays.

The one-meter diving competition saw the Vikes finish second. The tandem of Michelle Halse and Jennison Jenkins posted a score of 371.25 points. That was the best finish for the varsity squad.

Jenkins and Katie Hagensick combined in the 400-yard medley individual relay. The duo posted a time of 5:11.80.

Monica Tappe, Maria Lea and Aly Collins had one of the top times in the 300-yard breaststroke relay. Their time was 4:03.82, good for fourth.

The Vikings host Mason City today, Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. in the new Luther Aquatic Center. The next meet is Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Waterloo Central against Linn-Mar and Waterloo West, beginning at 6 p.m.
