Three local swimmers competed well at the Iowa Swimming Short Course Championships, held in Iowa City Feb. 27 through March 2.
Decorah boys swim team members Nolan Heffern and Mac Faldet, along with eighth grader Micala Folkedahl, represented the Decorah Swim Club. The meet was open to all current 2014 ISI registered swimmers. All athletes must have had an Iowa Q time standard in each event they qualified in.
Heffern competed in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. In the prelims of the 200 free, Heffern posted a time of 1:51.81, taking 29th. He didn’t qualify for the finals. In the 100 fly, Heffern had a prelim time of 54.80, taking 22nd. His finals time was 54.58, good for 21st.  In 57.64 seconds, Heffern took 26th in the 100 back in the prelims. His finals time was 57.38, good for 23rd. Heffern placed 44th in the 50 free prelims in 22.93 seconds and was 42nd in the 100 free prelims in 50.18 seconds.
Faldet qualified in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 50 freestyle. He placed 20th in the prelims of the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.45. His finals time was 1:02.25, good for 17th. Placing 14th, Faldet had a time of 2:18.60 in the 200 breaststroke prelims. He didn’t qualify in the finals. In the 50 free, Faldet was 50th in the prelims in 23.26 seconds. F
olkedahl competed in the 100 fly and 50 free. Folkedahl posted a prelims time of 1:04.50 in the 100 fly, good for 12th. She cut time in the finals to finish in 1:02.84, good for 10th. In the 50 free, Folkedahl placed 39th in the prelims in 27.70. 
 “As a new USA team in the state of Iowa, it was great to have these three represent the talent we have. Their time drops represent there is a lot of potential and growth yet to be made,” said Coach Eric Crawford. “Since we were a new team, we had a select few who swam at the SC Champs, but they definitely put us on the map as an up and coming team to look out for.”
