A year removed from winning the Class 3A state track title, the Decorah boys track team put together another memorable performance.

The Vikes scored 24 points, finishing 10th in team standings. Pella was the champion with 46 points.

At the end of the three-day meet in Des Moines, the Vikes picked up points from five events.

Things came together for the distance medley relay Friday. With Jacob Drost, Cole Svestka, Drew Schwartz and Kyle Hosting, the quartet took second overall in 3:31.95.

The Vikes had to wait a while before learning their place as they ran in the second of three heats. Centerville won the first heat in 3:31.38 and held on for the victory.

For Hosting, the anchor who ran the last 800-meters in 1:55.00, it was a goal to post a strong time.

"We knew Glenwood would be posting a pretty good time. I saw the heat before us had a really nice time, so I knew I had to stick with the guy in front of me and give a kick at the end and see if we could get under time," said Hosting. "We did have a pretty nice time. I was pretty pleased. It definitely was a nice way to finish off the year."

Schwartz, another senior, echoed those thoughts.

"It's been a fun experience so far this year, just finishing off the year well," he said. "We've had a lot of injuries, along with the weather this year. That's an excuse, but I think we're still running really nice times."
