The expectations couldn't be higher for the Turkey Valley wrestling team.

With 12 returning letter winners and six grapplers with district experience, the Trojans are hoping to have their best finish in school history this season.

Leading the way is Head Coach Steven Andrukaitis, who has been with the Trojans for four seasons.

A strong year

The 2012-13 squad was full of all letter winners. That paid off big time come the tournament part of the season. At the Upper Iowa Conference meet, the Trojans, propelled by two first-place finishers and four silver medalists, finished second overall with 226 points. Austin Vrzak (106) and Luke Kuennen (220) both took home gold medals.

Moving to the sectional tournament, the Trojans again finished second, earning a regional team dual bid. As a team, the Trojans nearly pulled off an upset at the team duals. They knocked off Class 1A No. 13 Maquoketa Valley 40-30 in the semifinals. They then fell to No. 4 Sumner-Fred 43-31 in the finals.

Eight TV grapplers advanced to the district individual meet. Facing tough competition at districts, Kuennen was the lone Trojan to advance to state. The first time in his career on the big stage, Kuennen went 1-2.

As a team, the Trojans went 25-10 last season.
