The Decorah sophomore football team (4-4) ended the 2013 campaign with a hard fought 35-26 victory over Western Dubuque in Epworth Friday.
"This was a very nice way for us to end the season. Coach Halweg and I feel this group of young student/athletes developed significantly during the season. More importantly, we feel they still have the opportunity to improve greatly over the next two years. If they continue to work hard in other sports and in the offseason, they will be able to continue the strong tradition of Decorah varsity football. We would like to thank the players for allowing us to coach them this season and for the parents, fans and other members of the Decorah football staff for their support this year," commented Coach Jeff Freidhof.
The Vikings started the game with the ball and went eight plays, ending with a 29-yard Garrett Wise TD run. Zach Lea would connect with the point-after.
Wise would find the end zone again in the second quarter from the same distance of 29 yards to put the Vikings up 13-6. Lea followed with the successful PAT. The defense got into the scoring action when Tim Winter scooped up a fumble and returned it 45 yards for a defensive touchdown. Lea added the point-after.
In the third quarter the Vikings would have only one offensive play, but they would make it count with a 70-yard touchdown run by Wise. Lea booted his fourth good PAT.
The sophomores would finish out the scoring in the fourth quarter with another Wise touchdown run from 6-yards out. Lea finished the night with a perfect 5-for-5 PATs.
