The Decorah sophomore football team (0-1) had a challenging start to the 2013 season, falling to Waverly-Shell Rock (1-0) 41-0 Friday night in Waverly.
"We are disappointed with this first game result, but we know we have the ability to play better football. Many of the issues we had in game one can easily be changed around. We know with a good, hard week of practice focusing on the fundamentals, we will see a lot of growth going into game two," commented Coach Jesse Halweg.
Garret Wise led the rushing attack for the Viking with eight carries for 42 yards. Cole Steffen was 1-for-2 passing with a 15-yard completion to Wise. Wise also led the Viking defensive effort with five solo and three assisted tackles. Other contributing members on defense were Dallas Matt with two solo tackles and one interception, Zach Lea with two solo and three assisted tackles and Tim Winter with two solo and five assisted tackles. Thomas Pecinovsky was also credited with blocking one Waverly-SR point-after attempt.
The sophomores return to action this week with a 5 p.m. kickoff at home Friday, Sept. 6, against the Indians of Marion.
