The Decorah sophomore football team moved to 5-1 on the season with a solid 41-0 victory over the Cadets of Crestwood Friday.
"We again played very strong defense backed up by a solid basic running attack. We are pleased our players are continuing to execute good fundamental football," stated Coach Jeff Freidhof
The Vikings started the scoring in the first quarter with Andy Sikkink plowing in from 7 yards out. Sikkink also followed with the successful PAT.
In the second quarter Decorah would score on three consecutive offensive plays. First Jacob Leeps found the end zone from 6 yards out. The PAT failed. Next Jake Hovden scored on a 6-yard rushing TD set up by a 34-yard punt return by Collin Nimrod. Sikkink connected on the point after. Hovden would find open running room on the next offensive snap when he would break free on a 53-yard rushing TD. Sikkink booted the successful PAT.
In the second half the sophomores went to the air for their last two scores. The Vikings were 2-for-2 passing for the night with both completions for touchdowns. In the third quarter Nimrod found Alec Fjelstul for a 13-yard TD reception while in the fourth quarter Caleb Kvale would find Nimrod open on a 32-yard TD pass completion. Hovden kicked both of the successful point afters.
Offensively Hovden had 15 carries for 166 yards, Nimrod had eight carries for 48 yards, Leeps had seven carries for 30 yards, Sikkink had two carries for 19 yards, Fjelstul had one carry for 40 yards and Adam Knight had one carry for 20 yards.
Defensively leader tacklers were Hovden with five solo, five assisted; Aaron Syverson with two solo, four assisted; Fjelstul with one solo, three assisted; Tyler Dostal with two solo; and Bailey Vickerman with three assisted. Syverson, Dostal and Tyler Numedahl were all credited with one sack.
The sophomores return to action Friday on the road against the Huskies of Oelwein. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
