Two sluggish quarters doomed any hope of the South Winn basketball team (1-2, 1-1 UIC) coming up with a victory Friday night at home as they lost to Clayton Ridge (3-1, 3-0 UIC) 40-69.

It was a slugfest in the first quarter, with the Warriors throwing the first punch by taking a 13-10 lead after eight minutes. However, the Eagles came back swinging, swooshing three after three to put up 24 points in the frame. The Eagle defense also stayed strong, limiting South Winn to just nine points. Heading into the locker room, the Warriors trailed 22-34.

It was another Eagle-dominated period in the third, with Clayton Ridge throwing up 20 points to South Winn's seven as the lead was extended to 54-29. The Warriors were outscored again in the fourth but only by one.

The Warriors had just one player in double figures. Junior Trevor Schweinefus put up 12 points, along with four rebounds, two assists and three steals. Isaac Taylor had eight points, as did Jordan Rommes. Rommes also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Andre Walz had six rebounds.

The Warriors are at Kee High tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 11, with a JV/varsity double header. Friday, Dec. 14, they host West Central.
