For the second year in a row, it was the runner-up spot for the Turkey Valley wrestling team at the Upper Iowa Conference meet, held Saturday at Postville.

The Trojan grapplers, propelled by two first-place finishers and four silver medalists, finished second in team standings with 226 points. Sumner-Fredericksburg, ranked No. 5 in Class 1A by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association, won the conference title with 248.5 points. It's the second year in a row the Cougars have walked away with the title.

South Winn finished fifth overall with 125 points and two gold medalists.



Trojan power

The Trojans were led by their two gold medalists.

Senior Austin Vrzak (106) won both matches he wrestled in. He had a bye in the quarterfinals. Facing Clayton Langreck of Sumner-Fred, he got the pin in 27 seconds. Wrestling Brian Jensen of North Fayette in the finals, Vrzak won an 11-1 major decision. He is now 37-6 on the year.

Luke Kuennen, ranked No. 4 in Class 1A, went 2-0 as well. At 220 pounds, the junior had a bye in the quarterfinals. He threw South Winn's Ethan Kipp in 54 seconds in the semifinals, then defeated Tyler Johansen of North Fayette 12-6 to take the title. He is 32-1 heading into the sectional meet.
