The bats were alive Tuesday night for the South Winn softball team (12-20) in the opening round of regional play in Calmar.

The Warriors used two home runs to power past Wapsie Valley (4-22) 10-3.

South Winn moved on to face Sumner-Fredericksburg (26-5) Wednesday, July 10, at Sumner, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The winner will face the winner of Denver (14-8) and North Butler (6-19) Friday, July 12, at 5:30 p.m. at Sumner in the regional semifinal.



Breaking through

The Warriors broke through first in the bottom of the opening inning when Courtney Humpal doubled, scoring a run. Wapsie Valley answered in the top of the second with a solo home run.

In the bottom of the second, the Warriors powered back. Morgan Bohr reached base with one out. She scored on an Abby Hageman triple. The inning was highlighted by a Brittany Shindelar two-run home run. Wapsie Valley scored three runs in the top of the third to tie the game at three.
