Two locals were recognized by the Des Moines Register high school football sports staff by being named to the preseason all-state team.
The lists are comprised of a first and second team offensive and defensive unit, with no distinction between classes.
South Winn’s Jordan Rommes was named first team offense as an end. Rommes, a 6’1”, 205-pound senior, caught 52 passes for 1,333 yards in 2013. He also had 36 total tackles at the safety position and punted 19 times for a 36.9 yards per kick average.
In addition, Decorah senior Jake Hovden was named to the first team defensive unit. At 5’10” and 185 pounds, Hovden collected 25 solo tackles and 22 assists on defense. On special teams, Hovden took 12 kickoff returns 337 yards and 20 punts for 335 yards.
Decorah and South Winn were both listed in the preseason rankings by the Register. The Vikings enter the rankings at No. 7 in Class 3A. Decorah went 11-1 last season. At No. 1 is Cedar Rapids Xavier. In the district, West Delaware is at No. 4, with Waverly-Shell Rock at No. 8.
South Winn is ranked No. 3 in Class 1A, led by the 12 starters back. Iowa City Regina is ranked No. 1, after winning its fourth straight state title. South Winn finished 9-3.
