Ready to pound the hardwood; Vikings have largely-untested, senior-dominated squad

It will be a new look for the Decorah boys basketball team.

Having graduated nine members from the 2012-13 team, the Vikings will be looking for several largely varsity-untested athletes to step up and replicate last season's success. Leading the team is Jonathan Carlson. This will be Carlson's second year at the helm of the program. He will be assisted by Tyler Balow, Brad Johansen and Gunnar Rollins.
A great year
The Vikings were full of experience and talent in 2012-13. With nine returning seniors, all returning letter winners, the Vikings were loaded with a group ready to make their mark.
They finished fourth in the conference with a 6-6 record.
The Vikings needed just two wins in order to advance to the state tournament. Battling Waukon in the semifinals, the Vikes came from behind to defeat the visiting Indians 50-40. It was an epic battle in the regional finals. Down by four points with under a minute remaining, Decorah nailed a three pointer to make it 45-44. However, the Cadets sank their free throws, defeating Decorah 49-44.
As a team, Decorah made 489-of-1,079 shots for a 45.3 percent clip from the field. They scored 1,259 points fo the season, a 54.7 average. Defensively they gave up 1,103 points. Overall, they collected 709 rebounds (206 offensive, 503 defensive), for a 30.8 rebounds a game clip. They also had 240 assists, 196 steals and 65 blocks.
