Spring can’t come soon enough for the Decorah boys track team.
The Vikings will be looking to make it another banner year in 2014, after last year finishing 10th at the state meet.
Putting together the key pieces is Head Coach Joel Rollinger. Rollinger has led the Vikes for 15 years and has been with the program for 29.

Looking back
The Vikes of 2013 were coming off a state championship year with 18 returning letter winners. Leading the way were returning state qualifiers Jake Drost, Kyle Hosting, Patrick Larson, Gavin Nimrod, Drew Schwartz, Josey Jewell, Holt Johansen, Cole Svestka, Forde Nesteby and Mikhail Suvorov.
The season was filled with lots of weather issues, with six meets being cancelled due to rain and snow. Despite the hurdles to cross, the Vikings grew through April and May.
At the conference meet, the boys took home the trophy for the second straight year, edging Waverly-Shell Rock 163 to 150. In total, the Vikes crowned eight conference champions – the 4x800, Larson in the 3,200, K. Hosting in the 1,600 and 800, Johansen in the 400 hurdles, the 4x400, Drost in the high jump and Jewell in the discus.
It was a wet night at the state qualifying meet as the boys again took care of the Go-Hawks, 159 to 149, earning their third team title in a row. In total, the boys qualified 11 events to the state meet.
The Vikes scored 24 points on the blue oval, earning 10th in Class 3A. The distance medley of Drost, Svestka, Schwartz and K. Hosting posted the best finish, earning second overall. Larson took fourth in the 3,200-meter run while Jewell was fourth in the discus.
