The Vikings return three letter winners, including two with state experience. They also have a large group of linksters ready for their turn to shine.
Helping the team to lower their scores all season long is Head Coach Rich Gaard, who has been leading the program for 43 years.
A great season
In 2013, the Vikings capped the year with a fantastic finish at the state meet. They returned three linksters from the 2012 state championship team. Despite some weather delays, the Vikings rolled through the season, developing talent for the varsity squad.
With a team of Sam Sacquitne, Tyler Hovey, Bryce Pierce, Michael Peter, Eric Fulsaas and Matt Schissel, the Vikes captured the Northeast Iowa Conference title for the fifth year in a row. Sacquitne, a freshman, was the medalist by firing a 74. Pierce tied for the runner-up spot with a 75. Peter (fifth), Fulsaas (sixth) and Schissel (13th) also earned all-conference honors.
The Vikes took care of the competition at the sectional meet, winning by 19 strokes. Peter Kephart was the medalist by carding a 76. Peter and Pierce tied for the runner-up spot, with Pierce winning on a sudden death.
Decorah punched its ticket to the state meet by winning the district title with 299 strokes. Pierce was the medalist, with Kephart fourth to also individually qualify for state.
On the big stage, the Vikings finished second best in Class 3A, just three strokes out of first. They carded a 650 while Creston won the meet with a 647. Peter tied for the runner-up spot with a 156. Other scores were Sacquitne (162), Kephart (167), Pierce (167), Hovey (168) and Fulsaas (171).
