The Decorah baseball team's (12-5, 7-3 NEIC) offense was explosive in the first two games of the week, producing 25 hits and 29 runs in two wins.
Defeating the leaders
Monday the Vikings defeated the former-NEIC leaders New Hampton (13-4, 7-3 NEIC) 14-1 on the road. The Vikes came ready to play, with Collin Nimrod reaching base on an error in the first inning, With one out, Dustin Cary doubled hard down the left field line. Then, Josey Jewell smashed a three-run home run over the left-center field fence to give Decorah a 3-0 lead. Decorah added a run in the second, seven in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Decorah had 14 hits. Jacob Kvale had three hits, including a double, with a run scored and an RBI. James Ostlie produced two doubles, two runs scored and four RBIs. Austin Ashbacher had two hits, a run scored and two RBIs. Bryce Pierce had a double and a single, a run scored and an RBI. Gavin Nimrod had a two-run home run.
Jewell was the winning pitcher, allowing one run on one hit.
"We did a really good job up and down the order, producing hard-hit balls that a lot of them went away from their fielders and getting men on. Of those 14 runs, we had 13 RBIs, so we did it on our own and that's what you've got to do," said Coach Dennis Olejniczak. "Josey pitched a very, very capable game. Maybe he had too many walks in five innings, but overall he kept their batters pretty off-balance with his breaking and fast balls and did a really steady job from start to finish."
