One game down, two left until state for Vikes

The first step in the journey was completed Friday night in the first round of district action as the Decorah baseball team (22-10) disposed of Charles City (10-20) for the fourth time during the season.

This time, the Vikings won 8-3 in the district semifinals held in Waverly.
The Vikings faced a formidable opponent in the district final in Class 3A No. 1 Waverly-Shell Rock (33-2), in a contest held Monday night (July 21) in Waverly. Putting it away
Decorah came out strong Friday night, putting up two runs in the first and second innings, one in each of the third and fourth and two in the sixth.
The Comets managed to scratch across a run in the second and two in the fourth.
As a team, the Vikings did it the Decorah way, with 11 hits and multiple players contributing. Austin Ashbacher led the way. He was a home run short of the cycle, with a single, a double and a triple, two runs scored and two RBI. Dustin Cary provided a double and a triple and two RBI. Cole Svestka had a single, three runs scored and an RBI. Bryton Meyer scored two runs and had a single. Brett LaRue punched two singles, scored a run and drove in one. Collin Nimrod and Jake Hovden both had a hit.
