Different opponent, very similar outcome for the Decorah baseball team (8-7, 4-4 NEIC) Monday night as the Vikings fell at Class 3A No. 4 Waverly-Shell Rock (14-0, 5-0 NEIC) 3-2.
Both teams scored all their runs in the seventh inning.
Although Decorah had many chances to score during the game, they didn’t break through until the top of the seventh inning when Collin Nimrod got on base with a double. He reached third in a single by Jake Hovden. Both Nimrod and Hovden scored when Austin Ashbacher got his third hit of the night, this time a double, to make it 2-0 Decorah.
However, things fell apart in the bottom of the seventh inning. After one out, the Go-Hawks got a scratch single. Decorah recorded a second out, then the Go-Hawks got another single, allowing a run to score to make it 2-1 Decorah with two outs and a runner on first. Decorah gave up another single, then hit a batter to load the bases. The tying and winning runs scored on a double to left field.
