The Decorah baseball team's offense was a little late to the show, but when it arrived, it came in style Friday night in the district semifinal against Cresco.
When the dust had settled, the Class 3A No. 10 Vikes (26-8) came away with a 10-5 victory.
Cresco ends the year 11-23. Decorah advanced to face Oelwein (22-10) in the district final Monday. Oelwein advanced by defeating Waukon 1-0 Friday in the first semifinal game. The winner of Decorah/Oelwein will face the winner of Class 3A No. 6 Waverly-Shell Rock (28-7) and Class 3A No. 2 Clear Lake (33-3) Wednesday, July 24, in New Hampton in the substate final, with the winner moving on to state.
The state tournament runs July 30-Aug. 3 in Des Moines.
Fans were a little restless in the first few innings of Friday night's game. Cresco started the game with spunk. The Cadets began the game with a single and bunted the runner to second. After a walk, there was a double steal. Following another walk, a Decorah error scored two runs. A run down on a bunt attempt stifled the inning.
The Cadets were back at it in the third inning, when they started the frame with a single. A double brought in the third Cadet run.
Decorah had a chance to score in the bottom of the third, with a single, an error and hit batter loading the bases with two outs. However, the Cadets were able to wiggle out of the frame.
They weren't so lucky in the bottom of the fourth. Kyle Kane led off the inning with a single. He reached second on a pass ball. Austin Ashbacher singled, then Brady Dawley smashed an RBI double. Gavin Nimrod had an RBI sacrifice, which was followed by a Collin Nimrod RBI single. Jacob Kvale doubled. The fireworks went off when Dustin Cary had a three-run home run, hit over the left center field fence. However, the Vikes weren't done. Jewell was hit by a pitch. He scored when Kane had an RBI double. That made it 7-3 Decorah.
The Vikes were back at it in the sixth inning, with consecutive doubles by Cary and Jewell, a hard single by James Ostlie and a sacrifice by Kane, scoring three runs.
The fight hadn't left the Cadets in the seventh inning, when they scored twice before the game ended.
