In a battle between two powerhouse teams in the state, it was Class 2A No. 2 North Fayette Valley (1-0) that came out on top, defeating Class 3A No. 7 Decorah (0-1) 14-0 Friday night in West Union.
The game saw two delays due to lightning.
It was smash-mouth football between the two power running schools. However, North Fayette Valley struck first on a 25-yard pass play with six minutes remaining. The TigerHawks came out of the second lightning delay and scored early in the fourth quarter.
The Viking offense struggled to find a rhythm, getting a first down on the first drive of the game but then not again until the fourth.
