The Class 1A No. 3 South Winn football team (1-0) started its quest for a state title on the right foot Friday night, defeating Waukon (0-1) 34-12 on the road in the opening game of the season.
Waukon, a Class 2A foe, advanced to the state championship game a season ago.
Despite heavy rainfall and an hour delay to start the game, the Warriors maintained its game plan, pounding the ball with its wealth of running backs. That plan worked, with the Warriors going up 22-6 in the third quarter.
